There are two main reasons:Įfficiency: I want to keep my gardeners busy enough on average that they are getting experience but not too busy that harvestable crops are waiting in the fields. I don't want all my crops coming to harvest at the same time. It's worth understanding the mechanics as strategy will change depending on biome, growing season and whether you are growing outdoors or indoors. r/RimWorldStreams - For all of your videos and streams needs r/RimWorldTales - /u/srgrafo's Rimworld Comic Series r/RimworldSwap - Swap saves with other players r/ShitRimworldSays - /r/nocontext posts about /r/RimWorld r/RimworldArt - Posts about Rimworld Artwork (not fanart!) r/Rimreddit - Colonists playing only on a single planet r/RimWorldPorn - High Quality Images of Rimworld Colonies No discussing pirated versions of the game. Hydroponics can make managing your colony much easier in what should be stressful times, but you'll pay for it when you could have otherwise grown crops outside for much less investment.Official subreddit for the console version! The reliance on sunlight and battery charge throughout the night can make an expensive hydroponics setup more trouble than it is worth. While this might work for your hydroponics needs earlier in the game, try to transition to a non-Solar Panel-based power supply as fast as you can. If you can't access a Geothermal Generator, you'll need five Solar Panels and at least two Batteries to keep the Hydroponics Basins on all night. The Solar Panel will help handle the peak demand during the day, while the Battery allows the Geothermal Generator to keep up around sunset. The best option is to use a Geothermal Generator paired with one Solar Panel and one Battery. To power the 24-basin hydroponics setup, you'll need to deal with a power draw of 4580 W during the day and 1680 W at night. If your Hydroponics Basins ever lose power, the plants inside of them will start to rapidly die. Sun Lamps consume 2,900 W during the day, and while the power draw of the basins themselves is less, they absolutely need to stay powered. Powering any hydroponics layout is a tall task. Making 24 and one Sun Lamp will cost you 2,440 Steel and 24 Components, and that's not including the cost of the power components that you'll need to run this setup. It's not cheap to build this many Hydroponics Basins. If powered properly, you can feed your entire colony off just hydroponics alone. On top of that, it can be scaled up as much as you want simply build a new Sun Lamp and repeat the layout around it as well. This layout lets you make the most of your space and your power. They can climb over obstacles like that and still plant, harvest, and haul just fine. Don't worry about your colonists reaching the basins in the center of the layout. If you place them just right, you should be able to fit 24 basins within the radius of a single Sun Lamp. That's why it's critical to pack as many Hydroponics Basins around a single Sun Lamp as possible. However, Sun Lamps consume an unreal amount of power, so you'll want to use as few as possible. If you want to use your Hydroponics Basins indoors, you'll need to have a Sun Lamp nearby to grow crops in them. However, you'll have to make sure you're using these powerful farming tools as efficiently as possible. Not only do they grow much faster, but they can keep crops protected from the cold of winter. Unless you've installed some handy mods, Hydroponics Basins are the best way to farm crops in the late-game.
